There is a lack of diversity in the journalism industry. According to Tara Ross, reporters must overcome their inherent biases and start being receptive to “difference and the worldview of other cultures” (Hannis & Nz Journalists Training Organisation, 2014, p.64). The lack of diversity in the news industry often showcases how certain communities seem more prioritised than others. I agree with this sentiment. As a Tongan male, it is hard to find news stories that are relevant to the Pasifika community. During the month of May, I would often look for articles that promoted speakers who highlighted the importance of AAPI month. Using the Lavin Agency website as an example, thirteen speakers were named to celebrate their contributions to AAPI. None of them were Pacific Islanders. That is why it is the responsibility of news reporters to challenge themselves and seek out the voices of those omitted by society.

Hi Salesi, This is a thoughtful reflection that connects the lecture material to your own experience as a member of the Pasifika community. Bringing in Tara Ross’s point about journalists needing to engage with different worldviews is a strong way to link your personal observation to scholarship. Your example about AAPI speakers also helps illustrate the issue of representation in a concrete way.

For the next step, try pushing the reflection slightly further analytically. For instance, you could briefly consider why these gaps in representation occur in journalism; is it newsroom demographics, news values, sourcing practices or assumptions about audiences etc?

Also take a moment to check APA referencing.

Overall, this is a strong start. Well done.
